GILGIT/KOHISTAN: Heavy rains in the northern areas have triggered landslides at several points along the Karakoram Highway, leading to its closure and cutting off Gilgit-Baltistan from other parts of the country.
The Meteorological Department had earlier issued warnings of severe weather, advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel. However, local sources say that bus companies’ rush for profit and passengers’ haste often contribute to such dangerous situations.
Officials confirmed that rescue teams of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) are working to clear the blocked roads. Hundreds of passenger and freight vehicles remain stranded, while the district administration has shifted around 60 passengers to a nearby shelter.
Meanwhile, heavy rains continue in the northern districts, raising water levels in rivers and canals. Reports from Buner district indicate persistent downpours in upper areas, with water levels rising in Buner Khor as well.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid travel until conditions improve.
