Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is reportedly “safe and sound” despite earlier reports suggesting he sustained injuries during the ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States.
A state television anchor appeared to confirm widespread rumors Khamenei was hurt, describing him as a “janbaz”, or “wounded veteran” of the Ramadan War, as Iran calls the current conflict.
In a Wednesday report, the New York Times cited three unnamed Iranian officials saying that Khamenei “had suffered injuries, including to his legs, but was alert and taking shelter at a highly secure location with limited communication.”
Mojtaba Khamenei, the son and successor of the Islamic Republic’s longtime leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on February 28, sparking a regional conflict, is 56 years old.
A low-profile figure, he has rarely appeared publicly or addressed official events and has yet to speak to the nation or issue a statement since being declared supreme leader on Sunday.
