Dehydration in Ramadan: Signs to watch and how to stay hydrated

MM News Staff by MM News Staff

Reading Time: 2 mins read

Water is essential for life, and even a slight deficiency can affect nearly every system in the body. Dehydration does not occur only through intense physical activity; simply going long hours without drinking water can lead to a shortfall.

During Ramadan, the risk increases as no fluids are consumed between suhoor and iftar, while the body continues its daily functions.

Experts note that a drop of just one to two per cent in the body’s water levels can impair concentration and reduce the ability to carry out routine tasks.

Common Signs of Dehydration

Dry mouth or bad breath

When the body lacks water, saliva production decreases. This allows bacteria to multiply, leading to unpleasant breath. If the issue improves after drinking water at iftar, dehydration may be the cause.

Muscle cramps or stiffness

A shortage of fluids and essential minerals can cause muscles to tighten or cramp, even without strenuous exercise.

Headaches

Insufficient hydration can cause brain tissue to contract slightly, triggering headaches that may affect part or all of the head.

Dark-coloured urine

Deep yellow urine is a clear indicator of dehydration. Pale yellow or nearly clear urine generally reflects adequate hydration.

Dizziness or nausea

Sudden light-headedness or nausea, particularly while fasting, may signal low fluid levels.

Fatigue and mistaken hunger

The body can sometimes confuse thirst with hunger. Dehydration lowers energy levels and may leave you feeling unusually tired.

Tips for Staying Hydrated in Ramadan

Drink sufficient water at both suhoor and iftar.

Avoid overly salty foods, as they can increase fluid loss.

Include fruits and vegetables with high water content in your meals.

Take breaks and avoid excessive exertion during the day.

Break your fast with water and light foods to ease the stomach and support rehydration.

A lack of water can affect sleep quality, energy, muscle function, mental clarity and even breath freshness.

During Ramadan in particular, it is important to replenish fluids properly at suhoor and iftar to maintain overall health and vitality.
