The Punjab government has introduced a mandatory dress code requiring all teachers in public schools across the province to wear black gowns during school hours while carrying out their academic responsibilities.
The government says this move is intended to create uniformity and reinforce a distinct professional identity for educators.
Under the policy, all teachers, regardless of gender, grade or location, must wear a black gown over modest attire aligned with cultural norms. School heads will oversee daily compliance, while district authorities will monitor enforcement to ensure strict adherence.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department on February 19, the new policy will take effect from February 23. District Education Authority chief executive officers have been instructed to ensure full implementation in their respective districts.
The department stressed that teaching is a respected profession associated with authority and moral guidance, adding that a teacher’s dignity is reflected in both conduct and appearance.
It said that a clearly defined dress code would foster respect among students, parents and the wider community, while encouraging discipline and equality within schools.
