During the India AI Impact Summit held on February 19, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, a highly publicized “awkward moment” occurred between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

The Incident
During a “family photo” intended to symbolize global unity and collaboration, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood between various tech leaders and encouraged them to link hands and raise them in a show of strength.

The Refusal: While other executives like Google CEO Sundar Pichai joined in, Altman and Amodei, standing side-by-side, notably refused to hold hands.

After a brief moment of visible hesitation, the two rivals opted to raise their fists in the air instead of linking arms.
Context of the Rivalry

Media and social media commentators have dubbed the moment “classic AI cold war vibes.” The tension is rooted in several factors:

Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela were top executives at OpenAI before leaving in 2021 to start Anthropic due to disagreements over AI safety and Altman’s commercialization strategy.

Relations further soured in early 2026 when Anthropic reportedly ran attack ads against OpenAI during the Super Bowl.

Despite the on-stage friction, both companies are aggressively targeting the Indian market. Anthropic just opened a new office in Bengaluru, while OpenAI announced a massive infrastructure partnership with the Tata Group.
