A long-standing mystery regarding why veteran politician Nasreen Jalil was once passed over for the Sindh Governorship has been clarified by the leader herself.

Speaking at the Karachi Literature Festival, Jalil revealed that her own efficiency in diplomatic outreach during the 1990s created a paper trail that state authorities eventually used to block her appointment to the province’s highest office.

For decades, Nasreen Jalil was the “English-speaking face” of the MQM, tasked with highlighting party grievances to the world. However, she recently shared that this very role, specifically her correspondence with international missions, resulted in a permanent “open file” with security agencies.

When the moment came for her to be proposed as the Governor of Sindh, these records were weaponized against her, leading to a formal rejection based on letters written years prior.

Jalil explained that because her English was superior to many within her middle-class party, she was thrust into the role of a diplomat during periods of intense political crackdown:

She was responsible for drafting and sending letters to international human rights organizations and various diplomatic missions to report alleged abuses against her party.

During this flurry of correspondence, letters were also addressed to Indian officials. Jalil noted that while this was part of a broad diplomatic push, it was recorded by state intelligence as a “red flag.”

Years later, when her name reached the final stages of vetting for the governorship, she was told her “file was open.” The decades-old correspondence was cited as the primary reason she could not be trusted with the constitutional post.

Despite the setback, Jalil reflected on how she spent six years without an official party title, proving her worth by sitting at telephone exchanges and making photocopies before becoming “indispensable” due to her reporting skills.

She noted with irony that the same reports that made her vital to her party’s survival eventually became the ceiling that prevented her from reaching the Governor’s House.
