The International Cricket Council (ICC) has responded to Pakistan’s announcement of boycotting its scheduled T20 World Cup match against India, expressing concern over the potential impact on the tournament and global cricket.
In an official statement, the ICC said it is awaiting a formal position from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding the decision. While acknowledging and respecting the stance of the Pakistani government, the council noted that such a move is not in the best interest of cricket.
The ICC emphasized that the equal participation of all qualified teams is vital for the integrity and success of a global event like the T20 World Cup. It warned that a boycott could lead to disappointment among cricket fans in Pakistan as well as millions of supporters worldwide.
Urging Pakistan to reconsider, the ICC stressed that all teams are expected to compete as per the tournament schedule.
The council reiterated that although governments play a role in national policy matters, member boards, including Pakistan, also carry responsibilities toward the broader cricketing community.
The ICC concluded by expressing hope that the PCB would find a mutually acceptable solution that upholds the spirit of the game and ensures the smooth conduct of the World Cup.
