Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a reduction of Rs4.04 per unit in electricity tariffs for industries, aiming to boost industrial activity and exports.
The announcement was made while addressing a ceremony in Islamabad held in honor of the country’s leading exporters and business figures.
The prime minister also declared a Rs9 per unit reduction in wheeling charges for industries and announced that the tax rate for exporters will be reduced from 7.5 percent to 4.5 percent.
During the event, awards were distributed among exporters who have played a significant role in contributing to the national economy.
Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that exporters deserve the highest praise, as their tireless efforts have brought recognition to the country.
He noted that despite challenging circumstances, exporters performed exceptionally well and achieved a notable increase in exports during 2025, bringing billions of dollars into the national economy.
Referring to economic challenges, the prime minister said that some voices had claimed Pakistan was heading toward technical default and that the country had repeatedly been declared on the brink of bankruptcy in the past.
He said that saving Pakistan from default was a major challenge when his government took office, as the economic situation at the time was extremely fragile.
Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged that the common citizen faced severe hardships but emphasized that inflation is now gradually declining.
He added that due to improved economic policies, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves have doubled, and government efforts have helped steer the country away from bankruptcy. He also appreciated the support extended by friendly countries during difficult times.
The prime minister said that positive results are now emerging from difficult decisions taken by the government. He reiterated that the government’s role is not to run businesses, but to facilitate the private sector, which he described as the true driver of economic growth.
