The body of a 10-month-old infant, Rida Fatima, who fell into a manhole along with her mother near Bhati Gate in Lahore, was recovered on Thursday after a 20-hour search operation.
The incident was reported to Rescue 1122 at around 3:30pm on Wednesday. According to rescue officials, search operations were conducted at three locations: Outfall Road, Bhati Gate, and Mohini Road.
Earlier, the rescue team recovered the body of the child’s mother, 24-year-old Sadia, from a sewerage line at Outfall Road, approximately three kilometers from the manhole, around midnight. The search for the infant continued until Thursday, when her body was recovered from the Sagian area of Lahore.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran said on Thursday that a high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident and will submit its findings soon.
He added that heads of all relevant departments are present on the ground to inspect the situation on the directives of the Punjab chief minister.
Earlier, police officials said that information about the woman and child falling into the sewerage line was initially provided by the woman’s husband, who was later arrested. However, authorities confirmed that all three individuals, including the husband, have since been released.
