Karachi: The Sindh Cabinet has approved compensation of Rs10 million for the families of those who lost their lives in the Gul Plaza tragedy.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
During the meeting, officials briefed the cabinet that affected shopkeepers are being provided Rs500,000 each to cover kitchen and utility expenses. These payments will be disbursed through the commissioner’s office.
Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said it was the collective responsibility of the government to provide maximum relief to those affected. The cabinet also approved interest-free loans of Rs10 million for each affected shopkeeper.
He said the loans are aimed at helping traders restart their businesses, adding that the Sindh government will bear the interest on the loans.
The government will also facilitate the provision of shops to affected traders to enable them to resume business within two months.
It may be recalled that more than 1,200 shops were destroyed in the Gul Plaza fire, with traders’ losses estimated to run into billions of rupees.
The chief minister reaffirmed that the Sindh government would take all possible measures to protect and support affected traders.
