Rare humpback dolphins spotted along Makran coast

A pod of humpback dolphins was spotted swimming alongside a fishing boat off the eastern coast of Makran, drawing attention from local fishermen and environmentalists. Similar sightings have also been reported near Pasni and Gwadar, suggesting that these coastal waters are a regular habitat for the species.

Deputy Director of Environment said that the presence of a large number of dolphins indicates an abundance of food in the region, highlighting the ecological importance of these waters.

Humpback dolphins are considered rare in Pakistan, with only occasional sightings along the Arabian Sea coast.

Previous rare marine sightings in the country include Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins near Karachi’s beaches, finless porpoises off the coast of Sindh, and occasional whale sharks in Balochistan waters.

Conservationists say that monitoring such rare sightings is essential for understanding marine biodiversity and ensuring sustainable fishing practices in the region.
