Following a similar initiative by the Punjab government, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced a free laptop scheme aimed at supporting students with special needs across the province.
According to officials, the scheme is specifically designed for visually impaired students who are currently enrolled in colleges, universities, or registered religious institutions. To qualify, applicants must be permanent residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and possess a valid disability certificate issued by the Social Welfare Department.
The initiative seeks to equip deserving students with modern digital tools to enhance their learning experience and academic performance. Laptops will be distributed on a merit-based system, subject to the availability of funds, with academic performance playing a key role in the selection process.
Applications for the scheme will be submitted through the provincial government’s online Management Information System (MIS), available on the official website of the Social Welfare Department.
A KP government spokesperson said the move reflects the provincial administration’s commitment to ensuring equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities and promoting inclusive education and digital literacy.
Education experts have welcomed the decision, noting that access to laptops can greatly improve academic outcomes for visually impaired students by enabling the use of screen readers, assistive technologies, and online learning resources.
It is worth noting that the Punjab government has also recently launched a similar free laptop scheme for college and university students.
