A senior Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader, Maulana Sultan Muhammad Wazir, died on Saturday morning. He had been critically injured in a bomb blast near a madrassah in Wana Bazaar, South Waziristan.
The blast occurred on Friday in the Konra Cheena area. Police said a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) had been planted to target Maulana Sultan. He was also the district president of Wafaqul Madaris al Arabia.
He was rushed to Dera Ismail Khan for treatment. Sadly, he died on the way.
South Waziristan (Lower) District Police Officer Muhammad Tahir Shah Wazir confirmed that an investigation is underway. Security forces are examining evidence from the site to trace the attackers.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed deep grief over Sultan’s death. He called him a “devoted and courageous leader.” Fazlur Rehman said the attack was not just against an individual. It was against the ideology of moderation, peace, and democracy.
He noted that scholars in the tribal regions have faced repeated attacks.
In March 2025, the party’s South Waziristan Emir was severely injured in a blast. Former district president Maulana Mirza Jan Wazir was also attacked in June 2024 and later died.
