On January 7, 2026, Netflix experienced a brief outage as a surge of Stranger Things fans rushed to locate a rumored secret ninth episode that does not exist.
The phenomenon was fueled by a viral fan theory dubbed “Conformity Gate,” which claimed that the Season 5 finale, released on New Year’s Eve, was an elaborate illusion orchestrated by the villain Vecna.
Fans speculated that “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up” was a false ending, pointing to alleged clues such as character poses at graduation mimicking Vecna, inconsistencies in the set design, and a final dice roll landing on seven as evidence that the true final episode would be released on January 7.
However, Netflix and the show’s official accounts have repeatedly confirmed that the series concluded with Episode 8. Despite this, fan excitement and curiosity led to a spike in streaming traffic, causing over 1,500 outage reports from U.S. users on Downdetector around 8 p.m. ET.
While no new narrative episode exists, Netflix has announced that a behind-the-scenes documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, will premiere on January 12, 2026, offering fans an inside look at the making of the show’s final season.
