According to a tweet shared on X by a customer, a renowned Islamic bank has a total customer base of around 4.5 million, of which an estimated 3.1 million hold ATM cards.
A simple calculation shows that just from SMS alert fees, the bank’s annual revenue reaches around Rs 7 billion, a huge sum collected without providing any additional service, while disregarding regulatory guidelines.
According to State Bank of Pakistan’s PSD Circular No. 02 of 2021 and PSPOD Circular Letter No. 01 of 2022, banks must send transaction alerts via SMS free of cost to customers for digital transactions.
However, some banks reportedly charge an annual fee of Rs2,250 per customer for the service, which may contradict these rules.
Financial analysts have called this move “an audacious act,” pointing out that earning such a massive amount without offering any new service raises serious questions about compliance with banking rules.
Customers and experts alike are questioning State Bank’s instructions and their violations, with calls for regulatory scrutiny to ensure the protection of consumer rights.
