The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to expand the BRT Peshawar route to reduce environmental pollution, ease traffic congestion, and provide better convenience to the public.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has directed the authorities to complete the preparatory work at the earliest for extending the BRT service to Jamrud, Tedi, and Bara Bazaar in Khyber district.
The chief minister approved the extension of the BRT route to Jamrud, Tedi, and Bara Bazaar in Khyber district and instructed officials to complete the work in the shortest possible time. He said that the BRT extension would not only make travel between Peshawar and Khyber district easier but would also provide the people of Khyber with a safe, quality, and affordable transport facility.
He added that the expansion of the BRT service would also help reduce traffic pressure and environmental pollution.
During the meeting, it was decided to construct a ramp at Karkhano Station at a cost of Rs500 million for the BRT service.
The chief minister was briefed on the infrastructure, buses, and operational requirements for the BRT service. It was informed that 12 new 12-metre buses would be purchased to launch the BRT service to Jamrud and Bara Bazaar.
The briefing further said that eight bus stops would be established over a five-kilometre stretch from Karkhano Market to Jamrud Bazaar. Similarly, 10 bus stops would be set up over a seven-kilometre stretch from Pashtakhara to Bara Bazaar.
The meeting was told that the BRT currently has a total of 18 routes covering 132 kilometers. It was further shared that by June 2026, 52 additional diesel-hybrid buses would be added to the fleet at a cost of Rs3.2 billion, while 50 electric buses would also be inducted into the fleet at a cost of Rs6.2 billion.
