Dense fog has severely reduced visibility on several motorways in the Central Region of Punjab, prompting the Motorway Police to temporarily close multiple routes to ensure public safety and protect lives and property.
According to the spokesperson, Motorway M-2 from Lahore to Kot Momin, Motorway M-3 from Faizpur to Darkhana, Motorway M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, and Motorway M-5 from Multan to Zahir Pir have been closed due to fog.
In addition, the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) has also been closed to traffic due to severe fog.
The spokesperson for the Motorway Police Central Region said that the purpose of closing the motorways is to prevent any possible accidents and to safeguard public life and property.
He warned that lane violations during foggy conditions can lead to dangerous accidents.
Meanwhile, an increase in Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has been observed due to low temperatures and weak winds.
Low wind speed and cold weather have allowed air pollution particles to remain suspended in the atmosphere, leading to a rise in the AQI. Under the Punjab government’s zero-tolerance policy, actions against smog are ongoing, while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and district administrations remain active in the field.
Crackdowns have intensified against brick kilns, industrial emissions, open food points, and smoke-emitting vehicles. Immediate fines and sealing actions are being carried out against activities producing artificial smoke, while continuous monitoring of smog hotspots is underway.
