A senior Russian military officer has been killed after a car bomb exploded in the Russian capital, Moscow. Lieutenant General Fanil Servarov died when his vehicle was destroyed in the blast on Monday morning.
According to Russian investigators, explosive material had been planted underneath the general’s car.
The device detonated as he was either entering the vehicle or attempting to start it, completely destroying the car and killing him on the spot.
Lieutenant General Servarov was serving as head of the Operational Training Department of the Russian Armed Forces. Authorities are treating the incident as a targeted killing rather than an accident.
Investigative teams were dispatched to the scene in southern Moscow shortly after the explosion.
Russian officials are also examining the possibility of Ukrainian involvement, though no official confirmation has been made so far.
Foreign media reported that Russian security forces, fire brigade units, and investigators quickly sealed off the area. The explosion was heard from a distance and caused damage to nearby buildings.
Officials said the death of Lieutenant General Servarov is being viewed as a major blow to the Russian military, and investigations into the attack are ongoing.
