In Karachi, the absence of basic safety barriers along drainage nullahs is putting lives at risk, with tragic consequences. Residents have long warned authorities about the dangers posed by unprotected canals, yet little action has been taken to prevent accidents. The latest victim is an elderly man who lost his life after falling into a canal in Korangi Zaman Town, highlighting the urgent need for proper safety measures in the city.
Rescue sources reported that the incident occurred near Korangi Kabaddi Ground. The elderly man was walking on foot with his bicycle loaded with goods in the dark when he accidentally fell into the canal. The incident took place yesterday evening around 6:30 pm, and CCTV footage of the accident has surfaced.
Police identified the deceased as Kale Khan, a resident of Zaman Town Sector 34-3. Initial reports indicate that the lack of a safety wall around the canal led to the accident.
Kale Khan lived in a rented house with his children and is survived by two daughters and two sons. His funeral prayers were offered, and he was buried in a local cemetery.
Meanwhile, locals said that repeated complaints had been made to authorities about the absence of a protective wall along the canal in front of a center and school for blind and special-needs children, but no cleaning or safety measures were implemented.
