Goods transporters across Pakistan have commenced an indefinite, nationwide ‘wheel-jam’ strike beginning from today, Monday, bringing the movement of freight to a complete standstill and causing significant disruption to the country’s supply chain.
The strike has resulted in the immediate suspension of all goods deliveries from factories, warehouses, and ports.
No cargo vehicles have departed from the major ports in Karachi or the city’s main truck terminals for destinations inland.
The cessation of cargo dispatch is expected to hit industrial operations and retail supply chains hard, potentially leading to immediate shortages and higher costs if the strike continues for an extended period.
The Chairman of the United Transport Association announced that all bus terminals will remain closed today, Monday, and the strike is being observed across the entire province of Punjab and may continue indefinitely.
He stated that the government must understand the difficulties faced by transporters, arguing that imposing a Rs.2,000 fine on a motorcyclist earning Rs.25,000 per month is an injustice.
Transporters’ leaders condemned the new laws and fines introduced by the Punjab Assembly, saying these measures are placing an unnecessary burden on transporters.
They further asserted that the amendments to the laws are tantamount to economic murder for the transporters.
They demanded that the government immediately withdraw these “cruel measures,” adding that the disregard for public interest in government decisions is unacceptable.
