Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs announced a major restructuring of its diplomatic network, revealing plans to close its embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar during 2026.
The decision, which requires a presidential decree, is based on “operational and strategic reasons.”
According to the press release issued by the Finnish Foreign Minister, the closures are directly linked to changes in the political situations within these three countries and their limited commercial and economic relations with Finland.
Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen explained that the move is part of a broader strategic review designed to concentrate resources on countries deemed more strategically important for Finland’s foreign, security, and export promotion interests.
Preparation for the closures has already begun. This marks the second time Finland has shut its mission in Pakistan, having previously closed the embassy in 2012 due to budgetary constraints before reopening it in 2022.
The move follows similar action by Sweden, which indefinitely closed its embassy in Pakistan in 2023, citing security concerns.
The Finnish government stated that these changes are vital for building a stronger, more competitive Finland capable of managing external relations in line with its national priorities.
