The United States has halted all immigration applications for Afghan refugees following an alleged terrorist attack near the White House that injured two National Guard service members.
The action was taken to re-evaluate the security and vetting systems.
The main suspect in the incident is identified as a 29-year-old Afghan national named Rahmanullah Lakmal, who arrived in the US in September 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome.

His asylum application was reportedly approved in 2024, but he is now being labeled as an alien criminal.
President Donald Trump declared the incident a terrorist attack, stating that Afghan refugees would be subject to renewed vetting, and any foreign nationals found ineligible to stay would be deported.

President Trump has imposed a travel ban on Afghan citizens and has also terminated the deportation protection previously afforded to Afghans under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.
Following the US military withdrawal in 2021, millions of Afghans were given special immigration protection; however, thousands holding SIV (Special Immigration Visa) will be exempt from the new restrictions.
