Power consumers in Pakistan may see a welcome decrease in electricity prices, according to reports by local media channels on Thursday.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed an application requesting a price reduction of 65 paisa per unit for one month under the routine monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hold a hearing today to review the request, which covers the fuel price adjustments for the month of October. If approved, the reduction will also benefit K-Electric consumers.
The CPPA’s application detailed the energy mix for October, highlighting that hydropower made up the largest share at 27.36%, followed closely by nuclear power (22.13%) and imported RLNG (19.72%).
This potential relief comes shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the ‘Roshan Maeeshat Bijli Package’ (Roshan Economy Power Package).
This major initiative is designed to boost Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural sectors by providing subsidized electricity for the next three years, until October 2028.
Under this special package, industries and farmers will receive additional electricity at a significantly reduced rate of Rs.22.98 per unit.
The Prime Minister stated that this will substantially cut the current electricity costs, which stand at Rs. 34 per unit for industries and Rs. 38 per unit for the agricultural sector.
