Traffic police have begun issuing fines for over-speeding, even though most roads in Karachi do not yet have official speed limits.
The traffic police have already issued hundreds of over-speeding fines, official speed limits have not yet been formally established on key city roads, according to local media reports.
Last week, authorities installed speed limit boards on Shahrah-e-Faisal, although the traffic police had already issued 1,967 speeding tickets during the first week of the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) from October 27 to November 3.
Traffic police say that they are working on setting speed limits for various roads. In the first phase, the speed limit on Shahrah-e-Faisal has been set at 60 km/h for cars, motorcycles, and light transport vehicles, and 30 km/h for heavy transport vehicles.
DIG Traffic Pir Mohammad Shah acknowledged that an official notification announcing individual speed limits for every road has not yet been issued.
He said that a detailed road safety and engineering review is ongoing, which includes examining road structure, entry and exit points, pedestrian activity, and traffic flow. Once the audit is complete, new and specific speed limits will be issued for each road.
He said that for now, a temporary uniform speed limit is in effect across all city roads. Currently, the speed limit for heavy transport vehicles citywide is 30 km/h, while cars, motorcycles, and LTVs (light transport vehicles) are limited to 60 km/h.
However, he could not specify when these limits were introduced or whether they have been revised over time.
