A fabricated message circulating on social media and WhatsApp falsely claims that former DG ISI, Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed, has been sentenced following the conclusion of his court martial proceedings.
According to the viral post, Faiz Hameed has allegedly been awarded “life imprisonment with hard labour,” all movable and immovable assets have been confiscated by the state, and his government privileges and pension have been revoked.
The post further claims that the names of his entire family have been placed on the Exit Control List (ECL), his brother Najaf Hameed has been ordered to be arrested, and all bank accounts have been permanently frozen.
However, the fact-checking platform Azad Fact Check has stated that the message is entirely false and misleading. It confirmed that no official announcement regarding any punishment for Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed has been made so far.
It is important to note that any news related to punishments awarded to military officers is formally issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). As of now, ISPR has not released any confirmation or denial regarding any such verdict.
Journalist Zahid Gishkori, commenting on the matter, said that the trial of Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed began on 12 August 2024 and concluded after 457 days. According to him, “My information suggests that he is likely to be punished, and it is possible that he may no longer retain the title of General.”
As per ISPR’s earlier briefing, the Field General Court Martial proceedings against Gen Faiz Hameed commenced on 12 August 2024.
The charges include political involvement, violation of the Official Secrets Act, compromising state interests, misuse of authority and official resources, and causing unlawful harm to individuals.
The military’s media wing also confirmed that the inquiry examined the alleged role of Faiz Hameed in triggering violent incidents, including the events of 9 May 2024, and whether any political actors attempted to influence or conspire with him. ISPR reiterated that all legal rights were provided to the accused during the court martial.
Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed was taken into military custody in August on charges of abuse of power and violations of the Pakistan Army Act.
