Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wajid, has strongly reacted to the death sentence handed down in a case of crimes against humanity, accusing the current government of political bias.
According to reports, Sheikh Hasina Wajid described the verdict as political, biased, and a “spectacle,” rejecting all charges against her. She expressed sorrow over the deaths that occurred in July and August of last year but maintained that all allegations against her are baseless.
In her statement, Sheikh Hasina Wajid said that no political leader, including herself, ever ordered the killing of protesters. She added that she was not given a fair opportunity to defend herself in court, nor was she allowed to hire lawyers of her choice.
The former prime minister further stated that millions of Bangladeshis, living under the chaotic and underdeveloped administration of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, understand that these so-called trials are a sham. According to her, these proceedings are not aimed at delivering justice but at targeting the Awami League to divert attention from the failures of the current government.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal-1 had convicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid in a crimes against humanity case and sentenced her to death. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun were also named as co-accused in the case.
The verdict relates to crimes committed during the July uprising last year, in which Sheikh Hasina, along with two senior officials, was accused of committing offenses against humanity.
