The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is considering a major update to Pakistan’s computerized national identity cards by adding citizens’ blood group information, a move aimed at improving emergency medical response and potentially saving lives.
The proposal follows a unanimously passed resolution in the Punjab Assembly, introduced by MPA Ahmed Iqbal Chaudhry, who emphasized that quick access to a person’s blood type during accidents or medical emergencies could help hospitals and rescue teams provide faster treatment and arrange timely blood transfusions.
According to the resolution, the absence of easily accessible blood group information often causes delays in critical situations such as road accidents, medical crises, and natural disasters.
Adding this detail to CNICs could significantly enhance emergency healthcare efficiency and strengthen Pakistan’s overall response system.
If implemented, the initiative would mark a key step toward modernizing national identity documentation and expanding its role beyond identification to include life-saving medical data.
