Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Mohammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced that Port Qasim is being developed along modern and advanced lines to help Pakistan achieve at least half of its $100 billion revenue target, adding that the port is now emerging as a major industrial and commercial hub.
Speaking as the chief guest at a ceremony, the minister highlighted that Port Qasim has been ranked the ninth most improved container port in the world, reflecting the success of ongoing reforms and modernization initiatives.
He said that Port Qasim’s performance score has improved by 35.2 points, indicating significant progress in reducing cargo dwell time, enhancing berth operations, and implementing digital management systems.
Chaudhry added that the government’s goal is to transform Port Qasim into a regional trade and industrial gateway that contributes to Pakistan’s economic growth through infrastructure expansion, industrial development, and environmentally sustainable maritime practices.
He stressed that the port’s strategic location and industrial complex position it to play a key role in achieving national revenue goals.
The minister further revealed a $13 billion savings plan for the next decade, under which Pakistan’s first “Sea-to-Steel” Green Maritime Industrial Corridor will be established to support the revival of Pakistan Steel Mills.
Under this initiative, port activities will be integrated with industrial production, creating a continuous value chain from maritime logistics to steel manufacturing.
In the second phase of the project, the Iron Ore and Coal Berth (IOCB) terminal will be rehabilitated.
He added that an Integrated Maritime Industrial Complex (IMIC) will also be developed, linking ship recycling with steel production to enhance local manufacturing and generate new employment opportunities.
