The government has decided to impose a 40 percent regulatory duty on the import of commercial used vehicles, which will be gradually reduced each year to maintain market balance.
A high-level meeting on the auto industry was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan.
Delegations from the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) and the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) also attended the meeting.
The participants held detailed consultations on auto policy, import of used vehicles, and measures for industrial facilitation.
Federal Minister Jam Kamal Khan said that a pre-shipment and post-shipment inspection system will effectively prevent corruption in the commercial import of used vehicles. He added that quality control and clear import regulations will enhance transparency and help the industry grow.
He further stated that amendments to the import schemes for used vehicles are being prepared to facilitate genuine overseas Pakistanis while preventing misuse of such schemes.
It was decided in the meeting that a 40% regulatory duty will be imposed on the import of commercial used vehicles, which will be gradually reduced each year to ensure market stability.
The meeting also discussed the proposal to standardize the baggage, gift, and transfer-of-residence schemes.
Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasized the need for close coordination between the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Industries to develop a sustainable and globally competitive auto sector.
Representatives of both associations presented their recommendations on localization, vendor development, tariff structure, and research and development (R&D).
