U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that his intervention prevented a potential war between India and Pakistan.
Speaking at an event, Trump said that during escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, he personally contacted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani leadership, warning them that the U.S. would not proceed with trade deals if they went to war.
“I was about to make a trade deal with India. I have a very good friendship with Modi — I respect him; he’s a killer, a very tough guy. Pakistan’s prime minister is also a great person, and they have a field marshal who’s an incredible fighter,” Trump said.
He recalled, “I was told that seven planes had been shot down, and both countries — nuclear powers — were attacking each other. I called Modi and said, ‘We can’t make a trade deal with you if you start a war.’ Then I called Pakistan and said the same thing. Both said, ‘Let us fight.’ They are very tough people.”
Trump added, “I told Modi, ‘You look great, but you’re a tough guy.’ He said, ‘No, we’re going to fight.’ But just two days later, both countries called me and said, ‘We understand,’ and the war stopped. Isn’t that incredible?”
In a sarcastic tone, Trump remarked, “Do you think Biden could do that? I don’t think so.”
