Lee confirmed her exit was a mutual decision with the show’s producers, explaining that it was “time to go” due to scheduling conflicts with her burgeoning film career, including projects like Tron: Ares.
The actress explained her reason for moving on from the long-running show:
Lee’s busy film schedule made it “physically impossible” to fully commit her time and resources to the demanding production of The Morning Show indefinitely.
Both Lee and showrunner Charlotte Stoudt felt that Stella’s character arc had reached a natural conclusion. The AI episode served as a “long time coming” moment for Stella to look in the mirror and question her path and ambition.
Lee felt it was an “honest ending” for Stella, who needed to “go rediscover some part of herself” away from the high-pressure environment of UBN. The character ultimately chooses to board a plane alone, symbolizing an uncertain but free future.
While Lee would have loved to stay on the show indefinitely, as she considered the cast and crew “family,” the circumstances dictated that her time on the series had come to an end.
