Pakistan sent its first hyperspectral satellite, HS-1, into space on Sunday. The satellite was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China, in the presence of Pakistani scientists and engineers.
Scenes of the satellite’s launch were shown at the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SPARCO) office in Karachi.
According to the SPARCO spokesperson, the hyperspectral satellite will help in predicting floods, landslides, and other natural disasters, and this satellite will be helpful in timely monitoring of environmental changes and geological hazards.
According to the spokesperson, this mission of Pakistan is an important milestone of the National Space Policy and Vision 2047, and HS-1 will open new avenues for infrastructure mapping and urban planning.
This will be the third satellite of Pakistan to be sent into space this year; before this, the EO-1 and KS-1 satellites were successfully sent into space.
As per SPARCO officials, HS-1 will start sending pictures from space within two to three months.
