Veteran Indian dancer and actress Madhumati passed away on Wednesday in Mumbai. She was 87.
As per the Indian media, Madhumati died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, and her funeral rites are scheduled for this evening.
Her passing was confirmed by tributes from her students and friends, including Akshay Kumar and Vindu Dara Singh.
The news of her demise has left the film fraternity and her students mourning the loss of an artist who lived and breathed dance.

Born in 1938 in a small village near Maharashtra, Madhumati’s journey from a humble background to cinematic fame was extraordinary. She began her career as a dancer in 1957 in an unreleased Marathi film and went on to perform in Punjabi, Marathi, Hindi, Bhojpuri, and South Indian movies through the 1960s. Her expressive style and versatility earned her wide acclaim.
At 19, Madhumati married filmmaker Manohar Deepak, who was much older and the father of four. Despite societal challenges, their relationship blossomed both personally and professionally.
After taking a break from the industry in 1977, she made a brief comeback in 2001. Following her husband’s death in 2002, she devoted her time to mentoring young talent through her Madhumati Dance Academy in Mumbai.
