Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has launched the King Salman Gate project, a major multi-purpose development adjacent to the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
The Grand Mosque in Makkah is Islam’s holiest and biggest mosque and the focal point for millions attending the Haj pilgrimage each year.
What’s King Salman Gate project?
Covering 12 million square meters, the ambitious project seeks to transform the infrastructure and services of Islam’s holiest city, aligning with the broader goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
The development will feature a mix of residential, cultural, and service-oriented facilities, and is designed to accommodate approximately 900,000 worshippers across both indoor and outdoor courtyards. Integrated public transportation will connect the area to the Grand Mosque, ensuring smoother access for pilgrims. The architectural approach aims to blend Mecca’s historical heritage with contemporary design.

As part of its cultural preservation goals, the project will also revitalize 19,000 square meters of historical and cultural landmarks. It is expected to generate over 300,000 jobs by 2036.
Saudi Arabia economic diversification
Saudi Arabia is undergoing a major economic transformation through its Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to reduce the kingdom’s dependence on oil by investing heavily in sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, and technology.
The Haj and Umrah pilgrimages play a crucial role in the kingdom’s economy. By 2030, Saudi Arabia plans to welcome 30 million pilgrims annually, combining the seasonal Haj and year-round Umrah pilgrimages.
In 2019 alone, the country earned approximately $12 billion from these religious events, according to official figures.
As part of opening up its economy, Saudi Arabia’s market regulator announced in 2025 that it would permit foreign investment in publicly listed companies that own real estate within the holy cities of Makkah and Medina, marking a significant step toward broader economic liberalization.
