In a tragic incident on Wednesday, Mirpur Mathelo Press Club’s General Secretary and journalist, Tufail Rind, was shot dead in a targeted armed attack, while his 10-year-old niece, Rina, died from trauma after witnessing the shooting.
According to police reports, Rind was riding his motorcycle along Jirwar Road near Masoo Wah, taking children to school, when unidentified gunmen ambushed him. He died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds.
His body was transported to the District Headquarters Hospital in Mirpur Mathelo. Authorities have launched an investigation, but no arrests have been made so far.
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow over Rind’s death, calling it a direct assault on press freedom. He directed the Inspector General of Police to submit a detailed report on the incident.
Tragically, Rind’s niece Rina, who was riding with him at the time, also lost her life—reportedly not due to physical injury, but from extreme emotional shock caused by witnessing the attack. Police stated that the child was overwhelmed with fear and could not survive the trauma.
The double loss has sent shockwaves through the local community and the journalist fraternity, intensifying calls for greater protection for media workers in the region.
