England all-rounder Chris Woakes has announced his retirement from international cricket after being left out of this winter’s Ashes squad.
The 36-year-old enjoyed a distinguished career, representing England in 62 Test matches, 122 One Day Internationals, and 33 T20 Internationals, with an impressive record of 192 wickets at 29.61, and 2,034 runs at 25.11 in Test, 173 wickets and 1,524 runs in ODIs, and 31 wickets and 147 runs in T20I.
Woakes was a key figure in England’s 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup triumph at Lord’s and played a vital role in the team’s victory at the 2022 T20 World Cup.
He made his international debut in a T20 match in 2011 and earned his Test cap during the final Ashes Test of 2013.
Woakes will continue playing domestic cricket for Warwickshire.
Earlier this year, Woakes featured in the thrilling 2-2 Test series draw against India. He suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder on day one of the fifth Test and bravely returned to bat on the final day with his left arm in a sling. Though he didn’t face a delivery, he managed to run four crucial runs before Gus Atkinson was bowled, ending the innings.
Reflecting on his career, Woakes shared an emotional message on social media:
“Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams. Representing England, wearing the Three Lions, and sharing the field with team-mates over the last 15 years — many of whom have become lifelong friends — are things I’ll look back on with the greatest pride.”
