The American magazine Foreign Affairs has declared the U.S. policy of favoring India over Pakistan a strategic failure.
In a recent article, the magazine asserts that India has never been a reliable partner for the United States and has consistently failed to meet Washington’s expectations. In contrast, Pakistan is described as a more dependable ally.
The article, titled “Why America Should Bet on Pakistan,” was authored by Dr. Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan’s former National Security Adviser. In his piece, Dr. Yusuf argues that the United States’ long-term strategic investment in India has failed to deliver.
He calls on Washington to reconsider its South Asia policy and invest in a more balanced partnership with Pakistan, one that promotes regional stability and could even help ease tensions between the U.S. and China.
He notes that former President Donald Trump had praised Pakistan for its effective actions against terrorism and its efforts to reduce tensions with India.
The article highlights that U.S.-Pakistan trade and energy agreements have been mutually beneficial. It suggests that American investment in Pakistani resources, including the Reko Diq mining project, could play a key role in regional stability.
It further warns that the U.S. policy of focusing unilaterally on India could widen regional divisions and escalate the risk of conflict.
The Foreign Affairs piece emphasizes that Pakistan’s National Security Policy calls for balanced relations with both the U.S. and China. Historically, Pakistan has even played the role of a bridge between the two superpowers. In contrast, a U.S. policy centered solely on India risks alienating Pakistan and weakening Washington’s influence in the region.
