Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has demanded the reinstatement of the 2001 local government system throughout the country and called on the Sindh government to account for the funds it has received.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, he said citizens are forced to pay for garbage collection, while billions have been embezzled through the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board.
He stressed that a fully empowered local government system should be implemented in every province.
He added that Karachi was devastated by recent rains, leading to urban flooding caused by incompetence, negligence, and corruption. “Karachi contributes 67 percent of Pakistan’s tax revenue, yet the mayorship has been handed over to the Pakistan Peoples Party through manipulation,” he said.
Directing his remarks at the Sindh government, Hafiz Naeem accused it of consuming funds without delivering results, saying that a system of plunder stretches from Karachi to Kashmore.
He demanded accountability for the urban flooding in Karachi and insisted on restoring the 2001 local government system, placing bureaucracy under municipal bodies instead of feudal lords and landlords.
He further alleged that whenever the Sindh government is questioned, it attempts to give such issues an ethnic twist.
