NAROWAL: A powerful flood surge in Nullah Dek swept away the Mangwal Bridge in Tehsil Zafarwal, Narowal, severing road links for dozens of villages and plunging the region into crisis.
The floodwaters have destroyed crops in Deledha, Naki, and Gujran, leaving farmers stranded in inundated fields.
According to district officials, the bridge connecting Sialkot and Zafarwal was washed away by the raging waters, submerging multiple areas including Uddo Fateh, Dhoda, Sokan Wind, and Chakor.
Authorities confirmed that Nullah Dek at Hanjli point has reached an extremely high flood level, with water flow recorded at 62,000 cusecs.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning that India’s Thein Dam is already filled to 97% of its capacity, and spillways could be opened at any moment. With expected rains in the upper regions and possible water release from the dam, the Ravi River is likely to experience high flood levels.
The NDMA further cautioned that flood surges from Thein Dam and Indian streams could swell the Ravi, while tributaries from the Pir Panjal range — including Bein, Basantar, and Dek — may also face extremely high flows, creating further flood risks.
Authorities have urged residents to stay away from rivers, streams, and low-lying areas, and to avoid unnecessary travel.
