A new spell of monsoon rains is about to begin in various districts of Punjab, as a result of which there is a risk of flash flooding in the Potohar region. According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), these rains will start today and may continue until August 23.
There is a possibility of heavy rains along with cloudbursts in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, and Attock. In addition, rain is also expected in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Okara, Kasur, Khushab, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Bahawalpur, Mianwali, Bahawalnagar, DG Khan, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Khanewal, Lodhran, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Layyah.
Due to torrential rains in the Potohar region, the threat of flash flooding has been expressed. Orders have been issued for legal action against those bathing in Nullah Lai in Rawalpindi. In view of the risk of urban flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, rescue teams have been directed to remain on high alert, and rescue personnel have been deployed around Nullah Lai and low-lying areas.
The public has been requested to stop children from going near Nullah Lai and electric poles, move to safe places before rainfall, avoid staying under weak roofs, and refrain from crossing streams and water channels.
According to the Director General of PDMA, due to rains in the upper areas, the flow of rivers is expected to increase. The water level may rise in the Indus, Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. At present, there is medium-level flooding in Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa, while there is low-level flooding in Tarbela, Ganda Singh Wala, and Sulemanki.
