Australia’s newly elected Pakistani-origin Member of Parliament, Bisma Asif, has made history by delivering her maiden speech in Urdu — a first in the country’s parliamentary history.
According to international media reports, the chamber fell silent when Bisma began her address with a warm “Assalam-o-Alaikum”, the traditional Muslim greeting. Lawmakers listened attentively and responded with applause to welcome her.

In an emotional address, Bisma said, “My identity is not just about me as an individual — my roots are in Pakistan, my language is Urdu, and I am proud of my Punjabi culture.” She added that her election was not merely a personal success but a milestone for all migrants living in Australia.
Born in Australia to parents from Lahore, Bisma Asif won her seat in the November 2024 state elections. Her speech has since gone viral on social media, winning praise from Pakistanis and the global diaspora for proudly showcasing her heritage on Australia’s political stage.
