She recounted that when she was in sixth grade, returning home from school by bus, a stranger sat next to her and behaved inappropriately by putting his hand inside her pants. “I was so young that it took me a few moments to even understand what was happening,” she said. “As soon as I realized, I panicked and quickly got off the bus.”
Terrified, Gautami walked for nearly 15 to 20 minutes, fearing the man might follow her. Upon reaching home, she hesitated to share the incident but eventually told her mother. Her mother’s response left a lasting mark on her: “Instead of being scared, you should have slapped him, grabbed his collar,” she had said.
Her mother taught her that in such moments, a girl must never remain silent — she must confront the offender. “Grab his hand, shout loudly. If nothing else works, use pepper spray or even hit him with your shoe,” her mother advised.
