In the first seven months of this year, 538 people lost their lives in traffic accidents across Karachi, with most fatalities caused by heavy vehicles, official data reveals.
The figures paint a grim picture: reckless truck drivers claimed 60 lives, trailers killed 48 people, and speeding water tankers were responsible for 44 deaths. Buses caused 25 fatalities, dumpers 22, minibuses 11, while oil tankers and coaches each claimed six lives. Pickups killed 15 people, cars 58, and jeeps five.
Hit-and-run incidents involving unidentified vehicles proved deadly for 103 victims. Among the deceased were 274 motorcyclists, 179 pedestrians, 52 women, and 68 children.
District-wise, the highest number of fatalities occurred in Malir (174), followed by West and Keamari districts (136), Central (77), East and Korangi (52 each), South (44), and City district (3).
Karachi’s roads have increasingly become death traps, with unchecked traffic chaos continuing to claim lives. If the situation is not brought under control, the coming months could prove even bloodier.
