China has installed a long escalator on Tianyu Mountain in Zhejiang Province to make it easier for tourists to reach the summit. However, critics believe it removes the joy of hiking and detracts from natural beauty of area.
Situated on the southern bank of Thousand Island Lake in Zhejiang province, Tianyu Mountain rises to an altitude of over 350 meters. However, its rugged trails make reaching the summit challenging for children and the elderly.
The escalator is 1,100 feet long and cost $2.2 million. It takes visitors up the mountain in about 10 minutes, spraying mist to keep them cool, according to Instagram. The escalator is very popular, especially among those who might find the traditional climb too challenging.
