An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad on Thursday sentenced 108 leaders and workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omer Ayub, Opposition Leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz, MNA Zartaj Gull, MNA Hamid Raza, Rashid Shafique, in cases related to May 9 roits.
As per media reports, the convicted leaders were granted 10-year imprisonments each, while some leaders and workers, including MNA Zain Qureshi, Fawad Chaudry, and Khayal Kastro, were acquitted.
The court also sentenced Member of the Punjab Assembly Junaid Afzal Sahi to three years in prison. He was also accused of playing a role in arson and rioting.
As per media reports, the special anti-terrorism court announced its verdict in two cases on May 9, amid tight security arrangements inside and outside the court. The court convicted 108 out of 185 accused in the sensitive institution attack case while acquitting others.
It may be recalled that after the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan on May 9, violent protests broke out across the country in which government and military buildings were damaged. Anti-terrorism cases were registered in different cities on these incidents. These cases were registered in Faisalabad on the complaint of the police.
