The Punjab provincial government is actively championing the widespread adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in public transport, aligning its strategy with broader national climate change mitigation goals.
This commitment was highlighted by Punjab Minister for Transport and Mass Transit, Bilal Akbar Khan, who addressed a major conference in Lahore focused on advanced technologies for commercial vehicles.
The “DMT & YEA Technology Launch Conference,” hosted by Yutong Bus Co., Ltd., a global leader in commercial vehicle manufacturing, marked a significant milestone for Pakistan’s public transport sector.
The event showcased Yutong’s Dual Mode Transmission (DMT) and Yutong Electric Architecture (YEA) – two cutting-edge technologies designed to boost fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and facilitate smarter mobility.
A key highlight of the conference was the signing of a pivotal contract between Wah Industries Limited (WIL) and Yutong for the procurement of 400 state-of-the-art Yutong electric buses.
This agreement signifies a substantial leap towards modernizing Pakistan’s transport infrastructure and signals a clear move towards sustainable public transit. The event saw the presence of Mr. Cao Ke, Deputy Consul General of China in Lahore, along with senior representatives from Wah Industries Limited, Punjab Transport Company, and other key stakeholders from government and the transport industry.
Minister Bilal Akbar Khan emphasized that public transport is undergoing a rapid transition towards electric mobility, heralding a new era of sustainable transportation in the province.
Following the successful introduction of electric buses, the minister announced an ambitious plan to launch Punjab’s first-ever electric taxi service. In its initial phase, this project aims to provide 1,100 electric vehicles to individuals through interest-free loans and convenient installment plans, facilitating easier access to eco-friendly transport for many.
To support this ambitious EV transition, a robust network of charging stations is being established across Punjab.
The minister underscored the critical need for a well-structured policy that prioritizes public interest, actively encouraging citizens to shift from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles to electric alternatives.
Khan further elaborated on the multifaceted benefits of widespread EV adoption, noting that it would not only lead to significant fuel savings but also play a crucial role in combating the pervasive issue of smog and reducing air pollution throughout the province.
