Roman Starovoit, Russia’s Minister of Transport, committed suicide just hours after his dismissal, strengthening the allegations that the Russian government spreads fear and intimidation, as reported by international media.
According to a foreign news agency, the Russian Investigative Committee confirmed his death, stating that Starovoit was found dead on Thursday in the Moscow region. His body, bearing a gunshot wound, was discovered in his car.
A spokesperson for the committee said that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death, but it is likely that Starovoit committed suicide.
The incident occurred just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Starovoit from his position as Minister of Transport.
Starovoit was appointed Russia’s Minister of Transport in May 2024. Prior to that, he had served as governor of the border region of Kursk since September 2019.
Russian state media has also speculated that the suicide may be linked to a possible criminal case involving corruption in Kursk and embezzlement of funds allocated for defense arrangements there.
