As geopolitical tensions intensify between Iran and Israel, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced significant changes to its international flight routes in a move aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers and crew.
The decision follows the temporary closure of Iranian airspace, which has prompted several international airlines to revise their flight paths across the Middle East.
In a statement issued by the national flag carrier, PIA confirmed that multiple international routes—particularly those to Gulf nations and major Western cities like Toronto and Paris—have been adjusted to avoid Iranian airspace. Instead of flying through their usual corridors, the affected flights are now being rerouted through alternative, safer airspaces, primarily those managed by the Sultanate of Oman.
A spokesperson for PIA elaborated on the updated flight plans, stating that flights to destinations such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain are now operating via the Muscat Flight Information Region (FIR). This region oversees a significant portion of Omani airspace and is widely used by commercial aircraft as a safe and efficient alternative when other regional air corridors are restricted or closed.
In addition, PIA’s long-haul flights to Toronto, Canada, and Paris, France, are also being redirected through Omani-controlled airspace to ensure uninterrupted service while avoiding high-risk zones. These measures, the airline emphasized, are being implemented in coordination with global aviation authorities to prioritize the safety of travelers and maintain the continuity of essential air services during a time of increased regional instability.
The airline further reassured passengers that despite the change in routing, flight schedules are being managed carefully to minimize delays. It also encouraged passengers to stay in contact with PIA’s customer service for real-time updates regarding departure times and travel advisories.
