Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt. Gen (retd) Sajjad Ghani yesterday visited the key construction sites of the K-4 Water Project to review the ongoing work.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the first phase of the project is likely to be completed and operational by June 2026, under which Karachi will be provided with 260 million gallons of water per day.
He stressed that the availability of funding is very important for the timely completion of the project so that the work can be completed within the stipulated schedule.
The Chairman WAPDA also appreciated the Sindh government’s efforts to provide electricity to pumping stations and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation’s efforts to improve the water distribution system.
The project is 63 percent complete so far, which includes the intake facility at Keenjhar Lake, pumping stations, and large pressure pipelines extending to Karachi.
The K-4 project consists of two phases, and after the completion of the second phase, another 390 million gallons of water are expected to be added, thus making it possible to supply a total of 650 MGD of water.
According to official figures, Rs75.21 billion has been spent on the project so far, while the approved budget is Rs126.40 billion.
In recent experiments, a 15-km pipeline has been successfully tested with water pressure, while another 25-km pipeline will be tested in June.
The project team has also completed the installation of a sleeve pipe under the railway track, which has eliminated the fear of obstruction in the flow of water.
On the directions of the Chairman WAPDA, instructions have been issued to the project consultants and contractors to accelerate the pace of work so that the project can be completed on time.
The K-4 project is likely to significantly reduce the problems of water scarcity in Karachi and can prove to be a sustainable solution for the city’s growing population.
