Three arrested after an altercation between the families of a bride and groom at a wedding hall in Karachi’s Azizabad area escalated into a violent brawl, with chairs being hurled by both sides, local media reported on Tuesday.
The situation prompted the marriage hall owners to call the police. But the charged men even had a scuffle with the police, due to which a constable, Hafiz Usman, was injured and taken to a hospital.
The police took three persons, namely Younus Masih, Harry, and Harry, son of Victor, into custody besides registering an FIR against 30 to 40 people, who, as per the police’s claim, were drunk.
Sections related to rioting, vandalism, and torture of police personnel were inserted in the FIR. Police said they were conducting raids for the arrest of the remaining persons.
Consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Pakistani law as per Islamic teaching. The government issues permits to non-Muslims, but they are also not allowed to drink publicly.
